Daumas was the Curator of the Museum of the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts, Paris. These are the first two volumes of a four volume set. Volume One traces technological evolution around the Mediterranean basin from Mesopotamia to the Islamic world at the height of the Byzantine Empire, and including Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Volume Two describes in historical context all the technological discoveries made throughout the world from the middle of the fifteenth to the middle of eighteenth century.
