In 4 volumes, vii,274 & iv,427 & viii,475 & iv,443pp., with engraved frontis portrait, bound in full contemporary polished diced tan calf, gilt decorated raised bands, full gilt decorations and borders in the panels, double crushed black labels, gilt titles, one volume label wanting, some wear at the edges, some hinges tender but holding, a very good attractive internally sound set (S12.2) Goldsmith (1728-1774), man of letters, was born in Pallas, Co. Longford, the son of a Church of Ireland clergyman who supplemented his income by farming. Early in his childhood the family moved to Lissoy, near Ballymahon, Co. Westmeath where he was educated locally before being sent to school at Athlone. He entered TCD in 1744. Item #12406
