Morton (1781-1864) spent much of his early adult years .'in walking repeatedly over most of the Counties of England noting their geology and farm practice. His notes were afterwards published in his book 'On Soils' (DNB) Between 1810 and 1818 he managed a large estate in Somerset and conducted the influential 'Whitfield Example Farm' - a report on which occupies the second half of this work.
