The fundamental basis of the work is his Mineral Theory, whereby the food of plants is of inorganic nature, and that every one of the elements of food must be present in a soil for the proper growth of a plant. An Appendix includes an article on "Japanese Husbandry" by Dr. H. Maron, a member of the Prussian East Asiatic Expedition. The editor was Professor of Chemistry in Queen's College, Cork.
