Hardcover. 8vo, 21cm, 6th edition, xii,452p., title page printed in red and black, in contemporary full polished calf, real raised bands, full gilt borders and decorations in the panels, crushed crimson morocco label gilt, some slight edge wear, a fine sound clean copy (s12.1) - Fitzosborne was the pseudonym of William Melmoth the Younger (1710-99), English Classical Scholar. He was remembered for his translations of Cicero and Pliny, but it was this, his first book that attracted much attention. The Letters were once much admired for the elegance of language and for their just and liberal remarks on various topics, moral and literary. Both Dr. Johnson and Thomas De Quincy had negative views of him. Item #24663
