Hardcover. 8vo, 20.5cm, the first edition of this edition, xxxvi, (42),424, (16) & 446,(24)pp., with copper engraved frontis portrait by Soest engraved by Vertue & 16 copper engraved plates (4 double-page) by Hogarth, indexes, list of subscribers, in full contemporary calf, raised bands, crushed orange morocco labels, gilt titles, gilt ruled borders on the boards, upper hinge starting on volume one but sound, one folded plate in volume two has some staining and is torn at the fold, some slight wear at the edges else a very good relatively clean sound set (n14) The first edition of Zachary Grey's annotated edition of Butler's great burlesque satire that has formed the basis of all subsequent editions. "Hudibras" was one of the first books illustrated by Hogarth in 1726. Employing a mixed etching-engraving technique, the illustrations are considered amongst his best book illustrations.
