The "guignol", a French marionette originating in Lyons, was believed to be invented by Laurent Mourquet (1744-1844), a puppet-master, who combined local French humour with the puppet character, Punch. He authored the principal plots of the marionette theatre that developed into the famed Theatre du Grand Guignol in Paris and The English Grand Guignol. This edition combines the two volumes first published in 1865 and 1870 and contains the introduction of 1865. Near Fine. Item #25633
