Hardcover. 8vo, 19.8cm, in 3 volumes, lxxx,366 & xvi,477,(1) & xvi,568pp., copper engraved frontis in volume one, 5 header vignettes, title pages printed in red and black, large engraved folding map (missing lower corner slightly affecting index), additions & corrections, in contemporary full speckled calf, full gilt decorations in the panels, gilt titles on crushed morocco labels, volume labels deteriorated, original marbled endpapers, small circular paper library label on volume one, some slight wear on the edges, a fine sound set (s13). ~ A note in Volume 3 explains that the first two volumes were published in 1767, (printed by Zempel) while the third was published in 1769 (printed by Komareck). The results of an extensive search to find Horace's summer home in the Sabine hills, near modern Tivoli, by Bertrand Capmartin de Chaupy (1720-1798), a Roman Catholic priest. Around 34 B.C. Horace was presented with the Sabine farm by Maecenas and it is felt that the rural atmosphere inspired many passages in his "Odes" and "Epistles". A very scarce, and attractive, set. Item #30421
