Hardcover. 4to. 26cm, xxviii,495,(1)pp., engraved frontis plate & title vignette and 41 engraved plates (3 folding), engraved head & tail piece decorations, index, in quarter polished brown calf backed marbled boards, gilt ruled raised bands, blind stamped decorations in the panels, crushed green morocco label, early bookplate, marble endpapers but lacking front free endpaper, near fine (dc1). ~ Text in Italian. "Historic Observations of some Ancient Medals to his Serene Highness Cosimo III, Grand Duke of Tuscany." An iconic study of Imperial coins and medals of the Roman Empire based on the collection of Cardinal Gasparo di Carpegna. Antiquary, Filippo Buonarroti (1661 1733), a great grand nephew of Michelangelo, had served as the Cardinal's secretary, conservator and librarian in Rome from 1684 1699 and was a prominent Florentine antiquary and politician. The thirty eight medal plates were engraved by Francescus Andreoni; the title page, frontispiece and decorations by Pietro Santo Bartoli.
