An iconic study of Imperial coins and medals of the Roman Empire based on the collection of Cardinal Gasparo di Carpegna. Antiquary, Filippo Buonarroti (1661 1733), a great grand nephew of Michelangelo, had served as the Cardinal's secretary, conservator and librarian in Rome from 1684 1699 and was a prominent Florentine antiquary and politician. The thirty eight medal plates were engraved by Francescus Andreoni; the title page, frontispiece and decorations by Pietro Santo Bartoli.
