"The Portfolio" was published from 1870 to 1893 and was a very influential in the Victorian art community. Volume 8 features reproductions from the Althorp Gallery (Rubens, Rembrandt, Reynolds, Murillo, Gainsborough) and National Gallery (Lawrence, Stanfield, Greuze, Carucci, Jardin, Reynolds). Hamerton contributions include essays on Poynter, Turner, Wyld, and Belgian etchings. A major essay is by Sidney Colvin "Albert Durer: His Teachers, His Rivals, and His Followers".
