(cgc) John Milton, (1608-1674). Shocked at his wife's desertion in 1643, after just thirty days of marriage, responded with the publication of several pamphlets protesting the marriage law regarding divorce. In 1643, he anonymously published The Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce, Restored to the good Sexes from the Bondage of Canon Law and Mistakes and in 1644, The Judgement of Martin Bucer concerning Divorce. These were received with extreme public, church and government condemnation which led to his publishing "Tetrachorden". The Tetrachordonis so-called because it treats four passages from Scripture (Genesis, Deuteronomy, Matthew, and First Corinthians), synthesizing them into a defence of divorce. In this, Milton replies vehemently to both lay and clerical antagonists. Wing M-2184. Coleridge 67. Item #36711
