Winearls, in Mapping Upper Canada 1780-1867.Toronto. 1991, mentions that "it is a rough copy of the plan of1842 (her number 1740) with blocks of land in lots 39 and 40, con.A, Nepean, marked as belonging to Messrs Sherwood and LeBreton." (Note: these names do not show on this copy of the map, butWinearls is not always accurate) Donald Kennedy (1804-88) wasactive as surveyor in 1842-43 and prepared a "Plan of Bytown andits limits shewing the exact situation of every street & lot", in1842 and a map of the Dalhousie District in 1843. Robert Bell(1821-73), surveyor, journalist and politician, qualified as aprovincial land surveyor in 1843. He moved to Bytown where hequickly established a sound reputation as a surveyor. In 1849,Bell's energy shifted to journalism and he purchased the BytownPacket, a newspaper that became known as the Ottawa Citizen in1851. William Lyon Mackenzie (1795-1861), famous merchant,journalist, politician, and rebel had attempted a business the1820's where he became acquainted with Robert Randall (1766-1834),a businessman and politician Member of the Assembly. Randall diedin 1834, and Mackenzie, as executor and partial heir to the estate,was to wage a 20-year battle over Randall's land claims. Good. Item #36861
