1860. No Binding. Image size 22x 33cm & 24x 35.5cm, heightened with white, titles inscribed within the images, along with the artist's signature (C.S.), and the dates. Handsomely framed. Beautifully and expertly framed, both 45.5x 56cm, (18"x 22"), in polished burled mahogany frames (2) with variant titles supplied via manuscript labels affixed to versos of frames, also signed by Shipley. Following a request by the Grand North Atlantic Telegraph Route to have a line sounded from the Faroe Islands to Labrador, Sir Leopold McClintock commissioned the paddle wheel steamer H.M.S. Bulldog on June 2, 1860 at Portsmouth. To join his crew, McClintock invited the accomplished artist Conway Shipley as his guest; Shipley having earlier produced such celebrated views of the South Pacific, as published by McLean in 1851. On this voyage, Shipley would complete a number of impressively large views, with two preserved at the National Maritime Museum (London). The present views are significant not only for their sublime Northern landscapes, but also for capturing a late phase of the storied Bulldog, which would soon be destroyed after a skirmish with Haitian revolutionaries in 1865.
