The map covers above the Arctic Circle to about 70ø N latitude, Baffin Bay, Hudson Bay, Labrador and Southern Greenland in the east to northern part of Lake Winnipeg in the west. It includes an interesting depiction of a passage between Lake Winnipeg and Hudson Bay alluding to a possible passage to the Pacific. Bonne (1727?- 1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. In 1773 he succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Dep"t de la Marine. In his official capacity, Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. His work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartography away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. Bonne maps, especially when rending terrain, bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin. His work is highly regarded for its detail, historical importance, and overall aesthetic appeal.
