(cdn) The First Full General History of Canada. McMullen, John Mercier (1820-1907). Born in Northern Ireland, he emigrated to Canada West in 1849 and became a journalist. In 1856 he was made publisher and editor of the Brockville Monitor and added bookselling to his activities. He published the first edition of the present title, which he brought up to date in 1868 and again in 1892. He took pride in the achievements of the country, recognized the fact that it had been colonized by people of different backgrounds. His was the first general history of Canada and was not merely an introduction in front of statistics and geographical information, as preceding histories had been. Its themes were the history of material progress and improvement and the political record of an extension of British parliamentary institutions and the rise of colonial self-government.
