Tall Copy, The First Edition, viii,[2],477p., with 14 lithographed plates (including lithographed title-page), in the publisher's original cloth with paper label, expertly restored, bookplate , fine tall copy thus. Uncut copies in original state are unusual, being one to one and half centimentre taller than the average copy. (qc) The bookplate of "B. Franklin Barger" which includes books in the vignette composite illustrations. Probably Maj Benjamin Franklin Barger (1837-1894) -Wounded 7 Aug 1864 during the Siege of Atlanta. T.P.L. 1838. R[obert] A[unchmuty] Sproule, a miniature painter and illustrator, came to Canada from Ireland in the late 1820's. Much of his work was published by Adolphus Bourne, as were the lithographed illustrations in this work, which were from drawings by A.J. Russell, W.S. Sewell, and Capt. Alderson. Views include, Quebec from Beauport - Castle St. Lewis - Hope Gate Dalhousie-Gate - Officers Barracks - St. John Gate - Palace-Gate - Parliament House - Marine Hospital - Quebec Harbour. Early in the history of lithography in Canada, the first lithographs were executed in 1824. Item #37975
