He had been very influential and prominent in Revolutionary France until involvement in a plot to restore the monarchy forced him to defect to the Austrians in 1793. Traveling throughout Europe he finally settled in England in 1800. He served as a consultant to the Duke of Wellington for the invasion of France in 1814. Item #38133
