A land surveyor of York, John Tuke had surveyed the whole of Yorkshire ("Map of the County of York" 1787) and saw the need for a study of the agriculture of the County. The included topographical hand coloured map of the North Riding is an example of Tuke's fine work. A proof copy, "printed and circulated for the purpose merely of procuring additional information, and enabling every one, to contribute his mite, to the improvement of his country." Fine.
