Prior was noted as an epigrammatist unrivaled in the English language. Thackeray wrote of him "Prior's seem to me amongst the easiest, the richest, the most charmingly humorous of English lyrical poems." As a diplomat Prior was noted as being prominent in the negotiating the "Treaty of Utrecht" which was nicknamed "Matt's Peace" Item #38455
