The Poetical Works of Thomas Moore Complete in One Volume. Illustrated with Engravings from Drawings by Eminent Artists.

New York. D. Appleton & Company. 1867. Hardcover. thick8vo, 24cm, 747p., with 10 steel engraved plates (inc. engraved title-page), in the original publisher's full brown calf, raised bands, double black stamped borders and centre dice decorations in the panels, gilt spine titles, elaborate blind and black stamped borders and decorations on the boards with gilt block titles, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, bevelled boards, all edges gilt, some foxing early and late but a fine copy in fine contemporary publisher's binding, certainly scarce in this condition. Thomas Moore and Robert Service are considered the best poets for reading aloud. In Ireland Moore achieved national success, an Irish equivalent to Burns. By 1808, overnight he became both rich and famous. Despite his notoriety around the world, intellectuals and nationalist at home considered him a stage-Irish warbler. cf. Brady & Cleeve. Biographical Dictionary of Irish Writers (1985). pp168-169. Item #40230
