The first part of this magnum opus was published in 1860 in two volumes, but was not completed until 1867.It was translated into several languages and reprinted well into the nineteenth century. Motley was, for a time, minister from the United States to Great Britain, but he is chiefly remembered for his role as eminent American historian.
