Le Clercq was a Recollet priest who spent a great deal of time in what are now Quebec and New Brunswick. This work is very important as it relates to the efforts of the missionaries to convert the Indians of the Gasp‚ peninsula. It discusses in great detail the natives' customs, dress, family life, and social intercourse before the impact of the European influx and settlement. Of great importance also are the examples of the Micmac language. Given the fact that he spent about twelve years with the Micmacs, knew their language, had day-to-day contact with them, and was held in high esteem by them, his Relation is one of the most reliable guides to Indian life and one of the best-written and most reliable sources of information relating to the formative years of New France.
