View of Locks. Entrance of Rideau Canal - Ottawa City Canada. [From: Hunter's Ottawa Scenery].

Ottawa. Published by William S. Hunter. 1855. 25.5x 33.5cm, sepia tone lithograph, by J.H. Buffords, Litho. Boston, very good to fine.(). Item #40686

One of the best views in this Ottawa series. Buffords fame came mainly as the printer of the Currier Ives prints. Homer, Winslow (1836-1910). "Probably the first book to include lithographs drawn by Winslow Homer, who was apprenticed to Bufford's of Boston at the relatively late age of eighteen, for a period of two years. The present work includes the apprentice's first substantial published lithograph (the third plate, View of the Locks, Entrance of Rideau Canal) which is initialed by Homer, and the large title vignette and five other plates that are attributable to him on grounds of style". Tatham suggests that "Interests seeking Ottawa's selection as the nation's Capitol may have been behind it or The Ottawa and Prescott Railway, which linked the town to Montreal, might have funded it in an attempt to encourage tourism.... ". - Tatham. Winslow Homer and the Illustrated Book, 1992.
