A.B. 6118. Based at Ellesmere Island, they explored the northern coast of Greenland, the interior and west coast of Grinnell Land (Northern Ellesmere). When relief ships failed to reach the expedition all but seven died of starvation in the attempt to walk to safety. Included are accounts of sea ice, sledge journeys, camp life, the arduous march, and the geography of the area explored. One of the first U.S. expeditions and one of the most tragic.
