The Treaty of Versailles was the peace agreement between the Allied Countries and Germany to mark the end of World War I. The armistice was signed on November 11th, 1918, though negotiations lasted for many months afterwards. Under the terms of the Treaty, Germany was required to pay for damage done to allied countries, a cost in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Violations of the Treaty began shortly after it was signed, and by 1935 Hitler began rebuilding the German navy and air force. The Germans' invasion of Poland in 1939 initiated World War II.
