~ French novelist, Pierre Loti wrote of the devastation wrought on France during World War One and illustrated same with graphic photographs. A lieutenant in the Welch Regiment on the Western Front, Ford Madox Heuffer translated the work - "the masterpiece of a French stylist". Ford Madox Hueffer changed his name in 1919 to the much more familiar Ford Madox Ford feeling the "Hueffer" sounded too Germanic.
