Louis Veuillot (1813-1883), was a historian, literary critic, journalist and the formidable chief editor of the newspaper, "L'Unzvers". A fervent Roman Catholic, he exposed his conservative views in his articles and publications. This particular work is a travel narrative about the author's personal experience in his youth when on a visit to Italy around 1838. As he encounters the history of the Catholic religion, its patron saints, its influence, he undergoes a spiritual re-awakening. This work also includes highly critical reflections contemporary society in France. As a convincing testimonial to rewards of religious conviction, this work went through several editions in the nineteenth-century.
