See Brunet, V:323-326. See Vicaire, 478-489 (other editions). Madame de S‚vign‚ possessed an extraordinary talent for writing, which is revealed in her personal correspondence. Brunet qualifies her collection of letters as, "l'un des plus pr‚cieux monuments de la litt‚rature francaise". Witty, lively, imaginative and extremely clever, Madame de S‚vign‚ transferred herimpressions and observations on paper with a rapid stroke of the pen. Her production was abundant, especially with her only daughter, Madame de Grignan, who lived in far-off" Provence. The letters carry an important historical value, by providing an authentic tableau de moeurs of the seventeenth century and judicious reflections on the court of Louis XIV. This edition includes over 1,400 letters to her daughter and friends, as well as the letters of her grand-daughter, Madame de Simiane. Our copy is a re-issue of the edition published in 1862 by Monm‚rque for his series "Grands ‚crivains de la France. "
