Anatole France was considered to be a model man of letters in his day. He was raised in his father's bookstore, and became a librarian at the Senate. Anatole France was a journalist, novelist and poet; his novels were much appreciated for their satire of the political and religious mores at work in 19th century France. His entire works were subsequently listed in the Roman Catholic Church's "Index Librorum Prohibitorum, " which he considered to be a badge of honour. "Les Opinions de M J‚rome Coignard" was first published in 1893, and reprinted many times. Anatole France won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 192].
