Bates said of one of Whitfield's stories "His tale is in my view a small masterpiece... in grave and lovely phraseology". Franes Meynell commented "Toether and Alone was only one of several which were largely experimental, and introued many unusual features. It is pleasant aesthetically, but the stores do not read well, wet in this italic type" -Cockalorum.
