Sabin 82859. John Smith was an English soldier, explorer and author. Referred to as Admiral of New England, it was he who gave the name to that region and he who played an extremely important part in the establishing and settling of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America. He was a leader of the Virginia Colony, based at Jamestown, led an exploratory expedition along the rivers of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay, and was the first English explorer to map the Chesapeake Bay area and New England. His books and maps served to encourage and to support the English colonization of the New World.
