France.

France.

Philadelphia. Published by M. Thomas. 1817. 23cm, 193,176,lxxxvi,pp., original boards rebacked, uncut, some penciled marginalia, small blind stamp at upper corner of a few leaves, one leaf repaired, pages lightly toned, contemporary names on front endpaper, very good to fine. (Tr). Item #42375

S&S 414888 (198p., which is party 1 only). The edition published in New York in the same years does not contain the "English Translation of the French words and Phrases" as this work does. One of the most vivid and hotly discussed literary figures of her day, Lady Morgan was at her best when she described the poorer classes, of who she had a thorough knowledge. This elaborate study of France under the Bourbon restoration was attached with fury in the contemporary political and literary journals, but this did not stop her from further contentious works.
