Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (February 27, 1807 – March 24, 1882) was the most popular and celebrated American poet of the 19th century. Born in Portland, Maine, and educated at Bowdoin College, he served as a professor of modern languages at both Bowdoin and Harvard University before retiring to focus entirely on his writing. As one of New England's famous "Fireside Poets," his narrative works became core components of American cultural mythology. He achieved massive global fame and was the first American poet to be honored with a memorial bust in Westminster Abbey's Poets' Corner.
