O'Brien. A094. By his own request Lawrence was given the French work, Le Giganteque, to translate soon after his expulsion from the RAF and re-enlistment in the Tank Corps in 1923. He appears to have been motivated both by a need for funds and by the wish to fill his free time. He used much freedom in the translation and it can best be described as a 'loose ' translation. He was asked to translate two other works from French: Custom's Sourly and Flaubert's Salammbo. He attempted the first and gave it up as a 'bad job'; by an ironic twist of fate it was then translated by Richard Aldington who later wrote a venomous biography of Lawrence (1955). The Forest Giant appeared in 1924, with an American edition published by Harper the same year, and reprinted by Cape and Droan in 1936. / Dust Jacket Included. Item #4579
