np. Readex Microprint. Great American, series. 1966. Hardcover. In brown fabrikoid simulating morocco, a very good to fine copy (tgc) Bernal Diaz del Castillo, a veteran of several Spanish expeditions in the New World in the 16th century, has also accompanied Hernan Cortes for the conquest of Mexico. In the 1550's Bernal Diaz began to write an account of the conquest. Spurred on by the histories of Gomara and of others which he believed to contain serious errors and distortions, he yearned to tell the "true" story of what had happened as he himself had seen it. All of his efforts and those of his family to get the manuscript published were to no avail, however. Not until 1632 did his History finally appear in print. - Foreword. Near Fine. Item #8612
